< >Tourism in Bhutan began in 1974 when the government opened its isolated country to foreigners to generate revenue and promote Bhutanese culture and traditions to the outside world. In 1974, a total of 287 tourists visited the kingdom. The number of visitors increased to 2,850 in 1992 and grew dramatically to 7,158 in 1999. By the late 1980s, tourism contributed over US$2 million annually in revenue.

 The daily tax for foreign tourists in Bhutan is   the  Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which   is $100 per person per night for most nationalities, as of June 2023. Bangladeshi tourists receive a reduced rate of $15 per person per night, up to the first 15,000 visitors annually; thereafter, they pay the standard rate of $100 per night.

Mostly Indian tourists visit the maximum number yearly.
