Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India consistently rank as the most polluted countries in South Asia and globally for air quality, with 14 out of 15 of the world's most hazardous cities also located in the region. High concentrations of fine particulate matter, driven by sources such as vehicle emissions, industrial discharges, and brick kilns, are the primary contributors.

City rankings: Nine of the top ten most polluted cities in the world are in South Asia, based on data from the World Bank.    

Primary pollutants: The main concern is fine particulate matter, PM2.5, which in some areas reaches levels up to 20 times higher than the World Health Organization's safe guideline.  

Contributing factors: Major sources of this pollution include vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and widespread use of brick kilns.
